When an Electric Boiler Makes Sense

No Gas Supply

If the property isn’t on mains gas, an electric boiler avoids the cost of bringing gas in or storing oil or LPG.

Awkward Boiler Position

There’s no flue, so an electric boiler can go where a gas boiler can’t, such as an internal cupboard with no outside wall.

Flats & Smaller Homes

Electric boilers are compact and quiet, which suits flats, annexes and homes with a smaller heating demand.

Lower Upkeep

With no gas or combustion there’s no landlord gas safety check to pay for each year, which is handy for rental properties.

Things to Know Before You Choose

Electricity costs more per unit than gas, so running costs are usually higher than a gas boiler in a larger home. Electric boilers also need a suitable electricity supply, and bigger models may need the supply or fuse board upgrading.

We’ll check your home and tell you honestly whether electric is the right fit, and what any electrical work would cost, before you commit.

Combi or Cylinder: Which Type Do You Need?

Electric boilers come in two main types. Which one suits you depends on how much hot water the household uses and whether there’s space for a cylinder.

Electric Combi

Heats your radiators and gives hot water on demand from the taps, with no hot water cylinder. A good fit for flats and smaller homes with one bathroom.

Electric Boiler with a Cylinder

The boiler runs the heating and heats a hot water cylinder. Better for homes with more than one bathroom, or where several taps and showers are used at once.

We’ll look at your home and your hot water use on the survey and recommend the right type.

Getting the Size Right

Electric boilers are sized in kW. Too small and the house won’t get warm on a cold day; too big and you’re paying for an output you don’t need, and you may need a bigger electrical supply than necessary.

We size the boiler from the number of rooms and radiators, how well the property holds its heat, and what your electricity supply can take, then confirm it in your fixed quote.

Replacing Storage Heaters

If you’re fed up with storage heaters that are cold by the evening, an electric boiler with radiators gives heat when you want it, controlled by a timer and thermostat like a gas system.

This means fitting radiators and pipework as well as the boiler, so we price it as a full job after a survey. We’ll also tell you if your existing electricity tariff would need changing.

Electric Boilers for Landlords

With no gas in the property there’s no annual gas safety certificate (CP12) to arrange, and no boiler flue or gas pipework to maintain. That makes electric a popular choice for flats and HMOs.

Rented homes still need an electrical safety report (EICR), and our electricians can carry that out too, so one firm covers the heating and the electrics.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an electric boiler cost to fit?

Electric boilers are fitted from £1,499 + VAT. We give you a fixed price before any work starts.

Is an electric boiler cheaper to run than gas?

Usually not. Electricity costs more per unit than gas, so electric boilers suit smaller homes, flats and properties without gas best. We’ll talk you through it before you decide.

Does an electric boiler need a gas safety certificate?

No. There’s no gas, so no landlord gas safety check is needed for the boiler.

Does an electric boiler give hot water as well?

Yes. An electric combi heats water on demand, or the boiler can heat a hot water cylinder. We’ll recommend which suits your home.

Can you replace my storage heaters with an electric boiler?

Yes. We fit the boiler, radiators and pipework, and price it as a full job after a survey.

Will I need a new fuse board?

Not always. Some larger boilers need the supply or fuse board upgrading. We check on the survey and include any electrical work in your fixed price.

Do you repair electric boilers?

Yes. Call 01202 668822 and we’ll arrange a visit.
