About Glow-Worm Boilers

Glow-Worm boiler serviced by Dorset Plumbing in Poole

Glow-Worm is one of the UK’s longest-established boiler brands, with a reputation for solid, dependable performance at a competitive price point. As part of the Vaillant Group, their boilers share engineering and components with one of Europe’s leading heating manufacturers — which also means parts availability is rarely an issue.

Popular models in the current range include the Flexicom and Betacom combi boilers, both well suited to the typical Dorset home. Older Glow-Worm models such as the Ultracom and Energysaver series remain common in the area, and our engineers have extensive experience working on both old and new units.

Common Glow-Worm Fault Codes

Glow-Worm boilers display fault codes on the control panel when something goes wrong. If your boiler is showing one of the following, call us and we can often advise over the phone before attending.

F.22 — Low Water Pressure

This is one of the most common Glow-Worm fault codes and often indicates the system pressure has dropped below the minimum required level. In many cases, topping up the pressure via the filling loop resolves it. However, if the pressure keeps dropping, there may be a leak elsewhere in the system that needs investigating.

F.28 — Ignition Failure

An F.28 code means the boiler has failed to ignite. This can result from a faulty ignition electrode, a problem with the gas supply, or a failed PCB. Because ignition faults can have several causes, a Gas Safe engineer should carry out the diagnosis — attempting to reset repeatedly without identifying the root cause can make the problem worse.

F.29 — Flame Loss

Similar to F.28, an F.29 fault indicates the boiler lit successfully but then lost the flame during operation. Common causes include a dirty or faulty flame sensor, low gas pressure, or a problem with the gas valve. As with all boiler faults, a qualified engineer should assess this before any parts are replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should a Glow-Worm boiler be serviced?

Glow-Worm recommend an annual service, and most warranty conditions require it. Ideally, book each year at around the same time — summer is a good choice, as engineers are less busy and you’ll have the boiler ready before the colder months arrive.

My Glow-Worm boiler keeps losing pressure — what’s causing it?

Pressure loss is one of the most common Glow-Worm issues, often shown as fault code F.22. It can result from a small leak in the system, a faulty pressure relief valve, or a failing expansion vessel. Topping up the pressure via the filling loop is a short-term fix, but if the pressure keeps dropping, a Gas Safe engineer should investigate the underlying cause.

Is it worth repairing an older Glow-Worm boiler?

Generally, if your Glow-Worm is under 10 years old and the repair cost is less than half the price of a new boiler, repair makes sense. Beyond 15 years, or if the boiler has a history of repeated faults, replacement is often the better long-term investment. Our engineers will give you an honest assessment either way.

Do you carry Glow-Worm parts?

Yes — because Glow-Worm is part of the Vaillant Group, many parts are widely available and our engineers carry a good stock of common components. As a result, most Glow-Worm repairs are completed on the first visit without needing to wait for parts to be ordered.
